Graphic designers really have a depth of knowledge about their subject that many people might not completely understand so this is what I think makes a really great graphic designer graphic designers have tons of unique skills and every designer out there is truly unique person put their own spin on the project that they're presented but there is designing a logo website packaging or signage these are a few of the strategies that really successful graphic designers use to make great design work first up a successful graphic designer uses creative thinking throughout the stages of the creative process create thinking means more than just opening up your mind to new ideas it means researching and understanding the unique challenges of your subject and considering all possibilities and outcome not just the first idea that comes to mind to create all logos websites and graphic designers have to thoroughly understand the context and intended use of the final product this goes back to the classic design saying form follows function if it design doesn't work well it doesn't matter how nice it looks choices based on a lot more than their favorite color or what looks pretty every choice has a reason behind it why would something be blue or purple what is the message that the shapes and colors are sending what is the historical or modern connection great designers make these choices by following a logical sequence of steps known as the creative process this process helps designers dig deeper into more interesting ideas and unexplored possibilities if you'd like more help on creative thinking or the creative process you are in the right place see my other videos on these subjects and subscribe to my channel for the latest weekly tips on art design and creative business obviously a graphic designer has to make great graphics but you also have to be a business person this means managing client expectations like budgets and timelines and presenting your work in a professional way managing client is an art form in itself I've been over 10 years working with client and some of the best design business advice I got was under-promise and over-deliver this means making sure that your clients know exactly what is actually possible within a certain time line and budget and then surprising them by exceeding their expectations maybe you can get them revisions a bit quicker than expected or maybe you can really take a design to the next level any time you exceed your client's expectations your building their trust in you to be their design partner a partner that they'll want to keep working with in the future in addition to managing client graphic designers often have to manage day-to-day business tasks including overseeing Printing and production building ongoing communication and meetings with clients and partners and a lot more managing a business can be really difficult for some designers because most of us are drawn to this field because of our love of creativity not so much taxes and legal stuff but a successful graphic designer knows how to put on right hat for the situation whether it's presenting work to a client or meeting with the accountant so this is what I think makes a really great graphic designer in addition to these other very important qualities graphic designers develop a deep knowledge of the technical aspects of design this includes knowledge of the design elements and principles in history and also technical software art making skills are honed over a years of practice great designers know the elements principles and color theory and most importantly how to use these aspects of design together in beautifully creative ways digital and Hands-On art making skills combined with knowledge of the subject are key to successful graphic design a great designer stays up-to-date with the latest developments and design software and learns new software when necessary for instance I'm an advanced user of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in InDesign, Graphic designer knows when social media platforms update the dimensions are add new features other technical knowledge the graphic designer should be familiar with include Printing and production methods designer should have a solid understanding of a sand papers and printing methods if you'd like to know more about the printing process check out my last video where I answer 5 of the most frequently asked questions that I get about printing graphic designers really have a depth of knowledge about their subjects that many people might not completely understand right designers are most interested in the details of their work and being skilled and thoughtful with her creative choices if you were looking to build your creative skills patient with me.
